Pelosi and Japanese PM Discuss Peace and Stability in the Taiwan Strait

U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida pledged their commitment to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait

as tensions escalate following Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, Kyodo reports.

< p>Kishida pointed out to the speaker that the actions of China, which launched ballistic missiles during military exercises, “seriously affect peace and stability in the region and beyond.”

China launched five ballistic missiles on Thursday, which fell in the exclusive economic zone of Japan. Because of this, the meeting of the foreign ministers of Japan and China in Cambodia was cancelled. Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi called Chinese maneuvers a “serious problem” for the security of the country and demanded that Beijing immediately stop the exercises.

Beijing began exercises near Taiwan in response to Pelosi's visit to the island.
